In this paper we assess the effectiveness of the Market Promotion Program (MPP) in increasing U.S. exports and benefitting
U.S. agricultural producers and food processors. Export shipments are linked to producer welfare using Kohli's (1978) profit
maximization (GNP function) approach to modeling international trade. Using estimated profit functions in conjunction with
a synthetic export demand function for processed agricultural products, we compute changes in farm and food processing sector
profits that result from alternative own-price and advertising elasticities of export demand with and without the MPP subsidy.
This approach allows us to investigate aggregate welfare effects of nonprice promotion without requiring the difficult task
of estimating the export demand effects of market promotion activities for numerous commodities and importing countries.

Tax competition between independent authorities is known to lead to inefficient outcomes, implying there is scope for cooperation. In an international framework where the authorities are national governments, the undesirable features of tax competition may alternatively be mitigated by imposing restrictions on international capital flows. Using a two-country model it is shown that capital controls may fully remedy the adverse effects of tax competition and thereby render tax cooperation superfluous. In more general cases, however, capital controls have some undesirable side-effects, leaving room for cooperative actions. This paper studies the properties of bid and ask prices posted by a monopolistic market maker, without parametric assumptions about the utility function of the market maker or about the probability distribution of the return of the risky asset. We first prove that the two prices can be higher or lower than the expected value of the asset, and that the spread is decreasing in the initial wealth when the market maker exhibits decreasing absolute risk aversion. We conclude by some examples illustrating the fact that almost all shapes can be obtained for the bid–ask spread (as a function of the inventory) depending on the probability distribution of the payment of the risky asset. 相似文献

This paper examines the liquidity effect and the term structure in two versions of the limited participation model—an imperfect information model and an adjustment cost model. With a discrete-state solution approach, I find a striking contrast: while the imperfect information model successfully generates the liquidity effect and the positive term premium seen in the data; the adjustment cost model replicates only the liquidity effect. This is because the adjustment cost that drives the liquidity effect in the adjustment cost model also creates an adjustment cost effect, which leads to a negative term premium. 相似文献

This study examines the role of patent protection on the behavior of transnational corporations and market structure in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. The method of analysis is the calibration of a theoretical model to firm-level data from two therapeutic groups of the Indian pharmacy market, and a simulation analysis asking the hypothetical question of what the market structure would be if India granted patent protection to pharmaceutical products. The model developed for the simulation analysis explicitly accounts for the complex demand structure for pharmaceutical goods that results from the presence of therapeutic substitute drugs, and product differentiation among chemically equivalent drugs. 相似文献

This article investigates the competition effects of supermarket services using fluid milk as a case study. A simultaneous equation model for services and price competition is estimated with scanner data from fifteen supermarket chains using two alternative measures of services, namely store size and principal components of in-store services. Empirical results show that increasing services results in economies of scope, greater supermarket chain-level demand, lower price elasticity of demand, and enhanced market power, leading to higher milk prices and quantity sold. We conclude that, as result of service competition, supermarkets differentiate themselves from competitors and successfully attract less price-sensitive consumers. 相似文献
